Winter months in Utah bring lots of cool events in our mountains. At the Utah Olympic Park in Park City, athletes from all over the world gather to compete in bobsled, skeleton, and all kinds of skiing competitions. What in the world is skijoring? Long ago, it was a method of transportation, and today it’s an exciting, unique sport.

Skijoring Utah/Facebook Skijoring is simply the act of skiing while being pulled by an animal. The practice goes back hundreds of years in Scandinavian countries, where people harnessed reindeer and skied behind as a method of transportation. People have also skied behind dogs and horses throughout the years to help them traverse snowy terrain.

Skijoring in Utah means strapping on a pair of skis, grabbing onto a rope that’s attached to a horse’s saddle, and navigating through a course.

The skijoring course is 600-1,000 feet long, and the skier must navigate ski gates and jumps, and gather rings along the way.

The races are timed, with point deductions for missed gates, dropped rings, etc. It’s a fast-paced event full of action and excitement!

Beginners will participate in the Recreation/Novice Division; experts compete in the Pro/Open Division. As a spectator, you’ll witness some incredible talent…

The 2020 Skijoring Utah event wraps up with the Big Air Competition on Saturday afternoon. Talented skiers take on jumps and are judged based on their distance from jump to landing.

The competition begins Friday, February 21st at 4 p.m., then continues on Saturday, February 22nd at 10 a.m.. Spectator tickets are $15.
