There’s a ton of history here in Oklahoma, which is lucky for those of us who love to explore both the outdoors and understand more about our home state. One of the most interesting places to visit is Spiro Mounds which includes 12 different mounds from which a huge collection of artifacts has been unearthed. Check it out!
Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center, in Spiro, is made up of protected lands comprising 150 acres.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it’s the only prehistoric Native American site open to visitors.

Home to the Spiro people from around 850 AD to 1450 AD, the site allows visitors to see the 12 original mounds that were discovered here. You’ll also be able to explore the village and see interpretive exhibits at the welcome center.

In the 1930s the mounds here were excavated allowing historians and archaeologists to understand more about this culture and what life might have looked like. A number of rare artifacts were found and you can see them in the on-site museum.

The nearly 2-miles of trails here are interpretive, allowing for learning while exploring. We especially love the nature trail which is about a half-mile.

While walking along the trails, visitors will come to learn about the importance of the location while also being able to clear their heads. This area is incredibly peaceful.

It’s located near the Arkansas River making it an important trade area during the Mississippian period.
