The Wyandotte Caves in Leavenworth, Indiana are one of the top caverns in the state to explore for nature lovers. Not everyone knows that this attraction even exists, and it’s right here in our own backyard. Full of history and natural wonder, this place is worth a trip from any corner of the state. Situated within O’Bannon Woods State Park is a marvelous attraction that all nature lovers need to see and explore. The Wyandotte Caves are known as the fifth-largest caves in the state.

Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972, the two limestone caves are situated along the Ohio River and are home to bats, fish, salamanders, and many other critters.

Cave tours are given on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and cost $8 for the Little Wyandotte Cave and $18 for the Big Wyandotte Cave. The first tour is 30 minutes while the second lasts up to two hours.

The temperature of the caves hovers around 52 degrees, so guests are encouraged to bring a jacket. These amazing pockets beneath the earth were created eons ago when shallow water used to cover the land that is now the Hoosier State.

The entrance to the main cave is 200 feet long. Archaeologists believe Native Americans mined the caves to use the resources for tools and jewelry.

Little Wyandotte Cave is also known as Siberts Cave or the “New Cave” while the Big Wyandotte Cave is known as the “Historic Cave.”
