There are just a few things we’ve noticed that ALWAYS stir up controversy in the Mountain State…don’t you agree?

  1. The Blue Ridge Mountains

Steve Byrne/Flickr Do they or don’t they run through West Virginia? This is a tricky one. Some official documents claim they do; some claim they don’t. Which side do you take? How much of your opinion is tied up in the song “Country Roads”?

  1. Hot Dogs

Jennifer Pauley/Flickr So we all agree we like them, but…DOES THE SLAW GO ON TOP OR ON THE SIDE?!?! And I’m not even going to bring up issues like Spam or chili vs. sauce or the toasted Texas Toast or English style bun…

  1. The Civil War

Richie Diesterheft/Flickr We all agree that yes, it happened. Yes, it happened here. In fact, these realities are pivotal to our very identity as a state. But now that it’s over, are we a Northern state or a Southern state?

  1. College Sports

mr_t_77/Flickr WVU or Marshall? We got to hash this rivalry out at the Friends of Coal Bowl for a few years, at least. Which side are you on?

  1. WV or W. Va?

Douglas Muth/Flickr At least we can ALL agree that it’s absolutely, positively, 100% NOT Western Virginia.

  1. Mountains or Beach?

Jeff Turner/Flickr JUST KIDDING. We all know the answer is mountains.

  1. The Hatfields and McCoys

Trending Topics 2019/Flickr So we’re actually all on the side of the Hatfields on this one, but it just goes to show that we definitely come by our healthy love of a good debate honestly.

  1. The Capitol

Governor Jim Justice/Flickr Okay, this isn’t something we actually fight about…it’s just an example of something our state has waffled back and forth on more than once. Wheeling or Charleston? Wheeling or Charleston?

  1. Pizza

Marco Verch Professional Photographer and Speaker/Flickr Oh, the fights we get into about pizza. Who serves the best pizza? Who makes the best sauce? What should you put on top? When should you add the cheese? Here’s what we all agree on, though - we LOVE pizza! In fact, West Virginia has more pizza restaurants per capita than any other state!

Okay, we know at least one of the items on this list has your blood up to a rolling boil (and probably more like all of them). So give it to us straight–where DOES the slaw go?!

What else do you and your West Virginia friends fight over? We know there’s a lot we don’t agree on, but we also know there’s a ton more that unifies us–including love for the Mountain State, spats and all.
