As New Yorkers, you’re already more than aware of the fact that our state has a true abundance of waterfalls. With thousands of these natural wonders scattered throughout our state, you’ll find some are hiding in plain sight while others require you to travel off the beaten path quite a bit more. Previously here at Only In New York, you may remember the fact that we highlighted how Ithaca is considered to be our City of Waterfalls. Well, today it’s time to showcase one of the many waterfalls that make up this scenic city of ours. Take a look!

Right along Six Mile Creek in Ithaca, the waterfalls that we’re going to share with you today happen to go by a couple of different names but for now we’ll refer to this destination as Wells Falls.

Also known as Businessman’s Lunch Falls, the Tompkins County natural wonder earned its nickname from the fact that this place is such a popular spot for local workers and businessmen to visit on their lunch breaks!

Aside from the series of waterfalls that cascade down more than 60 feet, you’ll notice one other element to these falls that will quickly pique your interest.

While Six Mile Creek is known for being Ithaca’s source of drinking water in current times, many moons ago the falls along the creek were harnessed for power at the Van Natta Mill that was built back in 1907.

Now abandoned and no longer in use, visitors from all around Ithaca and beyond make their way down this less than a half-mile trail to enjoy the views of the falls and old Van Natta Mill.

Just a stone’s throw away from the Mullholland Wildflower Preserve, grab a pair of sturdy shoes and hike on down to Wells Falls.
