When you think of the best meal you’ve had in Maine, did it include a white tablecloth and fancy waiters? If you’ve eaten enough meals in Maine, we’re willing to bet the answer is no. For most of us, the best meal we’ve eaten in Vacationland has included a fair few napkins and a roadside stand. There are plenty of lobster shacks here, but we recommend trying a different sort of roadside meal next time you’re hungry for something messy and quick!

How many people out there remember this little wagon sitting in Rockland in the early 1970s?

This little wagon was purchased by Keith Wass in 1972. Intended to be a summertime operation while in college, he quickly realized his love for the business and made it a full-time gig. College? It was put on hold.

20-year-old Keith knew the hot dog business was viable and, after dedicating himself to is, went on to open a number of other locations.

We particularly love the story behind the name. Originally intending to call the shop “Wass’ Wagon,” when a delivery person misspelled it as “Wasses” on an order form, he went with it.

Ordering an “everything” will get you fried onions, mustard, and relish. Nothing more and nothing less. If you want anything else, you’re going to have to ask for it specifically.

But, even the purists have to admit that the additions that have been added to the menu over the years only make this place better.

We’ve never tried to hide our love of hot dogs. We don’t like to play favorites and so we have to admit — we wrote about another incredible hot dog stand last spring. To learn more about it, click here.
