The rose garden was founded back in 1909 with a $60,000 public bond. It was the first public rose garden in Portland, and it welcomed more than 300,000 visitors in its first year.

The garden was designed by Emanuel L. Mische, a renowned Oregon architect, and it’s just absolutely stunning.

The garden includes 65 different varieties of roses, and you’ll want to make sure you have your camera hand to capture their beauty.

Make sure to find the pretty pink Mme Caroline Testout roses. This variety was cultivated right here in the rose garden, and bloomed in yards and along the streets of Oregon in the early 1900s, earning the city the nickname “City of Roses.”

The fountain in the middle of the garden is over 100 years old, and it’s an icon in both the park and in Portland itself. Make sure to spend some time admiring it during your visit.

The historic bandstand was built in 1913, and was once used for patriotic demonstrations during World War I. It’s a National Heritage historical structure and Portland Historic Structure. Once one of several similar bandstands, it’s the last one in the city.
