Right now, much of Iowa is shuttered while we combat the outbreak of COVID-19 throughout the United States. However, while we’re all cooped up inside, it’s important to find things to look forward to for when we’re past this outbreak and free to once again explore the Hawkeye State! Did you know that Iowa is home to an incredible state park that was built on a former Frontier Fort? When the Civilian Conservation Corps built Fort Defiance State Park, they were truly leaving a historic mark on Iowa. Plan a trip to visit when we’re free to explore once more!
Fort Defiance was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and it opened to the public in 1930. Since then, it’s been a woodland destination that Iowans have truly appreciated.

The trails here are meticulously maintained, thanks to local volunteers who help keep Fort Defiance groomed. Though you may not see another soul on your hike, you can clearly tell this is a beloved wilderness destination.
