With a nickname like the Ocean State, it’s pretty clear that Rhode Island is home to some stunning ocean beaches. That being said, for such a small state, we also have a large number of lakes and ponds that make perfect day trip destinations. Trustom Pond is one of them… and while the pond itself is pretty shallow, the area is part of a peaceful wildlife refuge every nature lover will appreciate.

Trustom Pond is located in South Kingstown, a small town in Washington County.

Susan D / TripAdvisor The pond is a closed lagoon, averaging between 1.5 - 2 feet deep.

Trustom Pond is one of 9 coastal lagoons in Southern Rhode Island, but it has one distinct feature: it’s the only undeveloped salt pond in the state.

Pdgram / TripAdvisor It has a surface area of about 800 acres, so it’s a good-sized lagoon.

The pond is part of the Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge, which is inhabited by a whopping 300 species of birds.

Greathill89 / TripAdvisor Needless to say, this is one popular bird-watching destination.

40 species of mammals and 20 species of reptiles and amphibians also call this place home.

Susan D / TripAdvisor You’ll be able to look for them from the observation decks you’ll find throughout the refuge.

When you’re checking for wildlife, don’t forget to check the pond itself.

Greathill89 / TripAdvisor The turtles and frogs are extremely happy here, and we can’t say we blame them.

The Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge also houses a few hiking trails, including a 2.5-mile loop trail that spans the entire property.

Juliancolton / Wikipedia This is a perfect trail for beginning hikers and young families. In fact, this wildlife refuge is the perfect place to spend an afternoon together reconnecting with nature.

We’re so lucky to have so many wildlife refuges here in the Ocean State that we can visit anytime. Have you ever been to Trustom Pond?
