Tobin Memorial Bridge Is Longest Truss Bridge In Massachusetts

If you’ve lived in the Bay State for any period of time, there’s a good chance you’ve driven across the Tobin Bridge. Dating back to 1948, this bridge is formally named the Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge, but locals all know it by either Tobin Bridge, or its former name, Mystic River Bridge. This three-span cantilevered truss bridge spans out across over two miles between Boston and Chelsea. Not only is this magnificent bridge the longest in the state, but it’s also the tallest in all of New England. Being the longest and tallest truss bridge in the area, it’s easy to see why we would call Tobin Memorial Bridge the best in the Bay State.

While this structure is typically known as Tobin Bridge by locals, it’s also known as its former name, Mystic River Bridge, as it towers over the Mystic River. Formally, this bridge is the Maurice J. Tobin Memorial Bridge.

This is a three-span cantilevered truss bridge, and construction started way back in 1948 before being opened in 1950.

The bridge spans over 2 miles across Massachusetts, between Boston and Chelsea. At a total length of 1,525 feet long, this makes Tobin Bridge the longest truss bridge in the state.

Besides being the longest truss bridge, it’s also the tallest at 254-feet tall. Not only is this the tallest truss bridge in Massachusetts, but it’s the largest in all of New England.

This cantilever truss bridge replaced the old Chelsea Street Bridge and then was opened in 1950. While it’s still standing strong, a massive reconstruction project was started in 2018 and should end by the end of 2020.
