When it comes to “best kept secrets,” Mississippi’s got several. One of the biggest – both figuratively and literally – is Red Bluff. The massive geologic formation is located in a small town on private property, which is probably why the site remains unbeknownst to many. Take a look:

Red Bluff is located in the small community of Foxworth, which is about three miles southwest of Columbia.

One look at the vibrant red and orange soil that Red Bluff is made of and it’s clear how the canyon got its name.

Aside from those living in close proximity to Red Bluff, many Mississippi residents don’t know the giant geologic formation exists.

Those who do know about it, refer to it as the Grand Canyon of Mississippi as well as the Little Grand Canyon.

Its obscurity can be mainly attributed to the fact that it’s located on private property, which means the state can’t really promote it. Luckily, though, the owner of the property doesn’t seem to mind people visiting.

So, how did the massive gorge come to be? Millions of years in the making, Red Bluff was formed by erosion caused by the nearby Pearl River. Over time, the canyon has grown to over 150’ deep, ½ mile wide, and almost one mile long.

Red Bluff’s smaller size isn’t the only thing that sets it apart from its famous counterpart, though. Unlike the Grand Canyon, Red Bluff continues to get bigger since erosion in the area is still very active.

Standing at the canyon’s edge offers some of the best views in the state, but you can do more than admire Red Bluff from afar.

You can actually hike down to the bottom of the canyon for some close-up views of the unique landscape.

The hike doesn’t end at the bottom of the canyon, though. At the foot of the canyon, you’ll find a stream; follow the stream through a forest to the Pearl River.
