Train travel was an important part of life in New England. It ensured the delivery of goods, as well as allowing the upper crust elite access to their summer homes. And, of course, locals relied on the trains to get to and from family, work and other important engagements. While some parts of America still see train routes as a utilitarian part of life, many of the trains here in New Hampshire exist for sightseeing purpose. We love these train rides, but today we’re giving a little attention the stations. One in particular is especially beautiful.
The North Conway Railroad Station was completed in 1874. From that time on, it’s been a beloved landmark in the center of North Conway Village.

In fact, because the town was so prestigious, attracting elite tourists, the station received extra special attention in its design.

As was typical of the time, there were separate waiting rooms for men and women. This was housed on the first floor. The first floor also contained the ticket counter and restrooms. Official offices were located in the second story towers.

In the 20th century, passenger service declined ultimately causing the end of rail service to Boston in 1961.

After this, the building was abandoned for over ten years until Conway Scenic Railroad reopened the station in 1974 for tourist train excursions throughout the Mount Washington Valley.
