Fort Adams State Park is located in Newport, at the base of Newport Harbor.

Fort Adams, which is named after President Adams, is a former Army post that dates all the way back to 1799. In fact, it was established on the 4th of July of that year.

The fort was most active from 1841 - 1950. But due to the length of time it existed, it was utilized during quite a few wars.

In 1953, the Army transferred ownership of Fort Adams to the Navy, and you’ll find some Navy housing in the area to this day.

Many of the fort’s old buildings have been restored and well-preserved, thanks in part to the efforts of State Senator Eric O’D. Taylor in the 1970s.
