The Wallowa Lake Tramway In Oregon Is The Steepest In North America

Are you looking for an awesome Oregon adventure? The Wallowa Lake Tramway opens in late May every year, and we can’t wait to soak in the scenic views. The tram was the steepest four-person gondola in all of North America when it was built in 1970, and it’s right here in our own backyard!

For a day full of fresh air and adventure, head to Wallowa Lake to ride the tramway. You’ll find it just south of the town of Joseph.

This area is absolutely gorgeous, but snow remains at the top far into the summer. Make sure to bring a jacket so you’ll be comfortable while exploring at the top.

When you reach the summit of Mt. Howard, you’ll be at an elevation of 8,150 feet, and the fun is just beginning.

Two loop trails at the top of the mountain lead to the most incredible views, so decide which to tackle first, and head out.

Wallowa Lake Tramway

The trail to the Summit Overlook is the shorter of the two loops, and it takes you along a dirt path for just three quarters of a mile. There’s a slight incline along the trail, but most visitors are able to navigate it.

After your hike, stop by the Summit Grill for a casual meal with a killer view.

You’ll never tire of these views, but the tram closes down at 4 p.m. in June and September, and 5 p.m. in July and August. On the way down, you’ll be treated to the same sweeping valley views.
