You know spring has truly arrived when the snow geese flock over North Dakota. When they do, it’s not just a few formations flying over at a time — it’s in the thousands, and sometimes millions. If you’ve never seen it in person before, you’re in for a treat this time of year as the migration is well underway right now. Here are some of the spectacular sights you might see right now:
At first glance at this photo taken in North Dakota, you might be confused as to what exactly is filling the sky. This shot shows only part of a mile-long flock with likely well over a million snow geese during their annual spring migration.

If you live in North Dakota, you’ll have probably already spotted formations like this overhead. These formations are heading north to their summer breeding grounds in northern Canada, Alaska, and even into Greenland.

North Dakota’s fields and prairie pothole region are perfect spots for snow geese to stop and rest, and during late March and into early April you’ll probably see thousands of these geese hanging out in fields or landing in lakes.

Oftentimes, the flocks are absolutely massive and will completely blow you away. It is not only an amazing sight to behold, but the sound is incredible — thousands upon thousands of wings flapping and geese honking.

The snow geese travel more than 3,000 miles from their wintering grounds in the southern US and Mexico to the breeding grounds. North Dakota is a highly trafficked part of the central flyway and gets to see this spectacle each year.

If you want to see an absolutely amazing view like this, you’ll have the best luck in the prairie pothole region or around lakes, where they land to rest and take off together in the thousands. It’s truly an unforgettable experience to witness.
