The Newport Winter Festival is a time-honored February tradition we all know and love. And two years ago, the organizers actually added a festival within a festival. The Mac & Cheese Smackdown was such a hit that it’s returning for a third time, and we couldn’t be happier.

Every year, Newport Winter Festival gives us 10 days of continuous music, food, and fun.

Many of the events take place at the lovely Gurney’s Newport Resort, and that’s where you’ll find the Mac & Cheese Smackdown.

So what is it, exactly? basically, restaurants from Newport and the surrounding cities compete for prizes by cooking and handing out samples of their finest mac & cheese recipes.

Your only job as a guest is to eat as much mac & cheese as you can, then simply vote for your favorite.

This year’s Mac & Cheese Smackdown will be on Saturday, February 22nd, from 11:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Newport Winter Festival / Facebook And if you’re worried about traffic or parking, you can catch the Newport Trolley for free that day. Free Trolley Saturday runs from 11:45 a.m. - 3:45 p.m. and makes continuous loops with stops at The Newport Gateway Center, The Newport Harbor Hotel, and in front of The Red Parrot, taking you to Gurney’s.

Prices for this year’s contest haven’t been released yet. Last year, they were $13 in advance and $15 at the door.
