Here’s a fun fact for you: North Dakota has the most churches per capita in all of the US. There are many beautiful churches across the plains, some large and grand and others small yet gorgeous in their own way. Many of these churches are quite old, and some congregations even older, but none are as old as this specific church in the middle of nowhere. It’s well over a century old and everyone should see it. Take a look:
A ways outside of Bismarck, North Dakota is the small town of Hazelton.

This town has only 235 people residing in it. It’s a lovely snapshot into the small town life in North Dakota.

Hazelton is also the closest place to the oldest church in North Dakota. It’s out of the way by a bit but well worth a small detour to see. That church is the Glencoe Sloan Church.

You’ll have to get off the pavement onto a gravel road to visit this humble little church. It’s tucked right around the corner behind the trees.

The church was built in 1885, making it over 130 years old today. It is a Presbyterian church that even predates North Dakota being a state!

The Glencoe Sloan Church is still being used by the original congregation today, making it the oldest in the state. The oldest congregation in North Dakota began in 1818 in Pembina, the oldest town.
