When you think of the Outer Banks, white sandy beaches and beautiful blue water probably comes to mind. While the Outer Banks is certainly a destination hot spot for anyone looking for some beach time, there’s also a lovely hidden gem that’s perfect for nature lovers, and that’s the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. There’s a delightful little trail nestled within this refuge that makes for a perfect afternoon stroll. Keep this hidden gem in mind for the summertime!

Established in 1937, the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is 5,834-acres of some of the most beautiful scenery North Carolina has to offer.

Known as a “Birder’s Paradise,” Pea Island is home to nearly 400 different species of migrating birds and other wildlife. No matter what time of year you visit, you’re practically guaranteed to see some wildlife.

Within the refuge, there are two different trails: the North Pond Trail, which covers more marshy ground, and the Salt Flats Trail, a slightly more rustic and primitive trail with equally scenic views.
