There are just over 5,000 bridges in the state of Montana, a number that seems pretty high until you take into consideration that our state is the fourth largest in the nation. Still, we’ve definitely got some beautiful bridges that stand out. And if you’ve ever crossed the Koocanusa Bridge, you know it’s truly something special. Not only is it the tallest bridge in the Treasure State, but the views are absolutely stunning.

Lake Koocanusa is a 90-mile long reservoir located in Northwest Montana.

The Koocanusa Bridge spans the entire length of the lake.

The bridge was built in 1971, connecting Highway 37 to the western side of the reservoir and the recreational opportunities there.

You can cross this bridge by traveling the length of the beautiful Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway.

We share Lake Koocanusa with British Columbia, which is actually how it got part of its name. When a contest was held to name the Libby Dam Reservoir, Montanan Alice Beers combined the first three letters from Kootenai River, the first three letters of Canada, and USA.
