We’ve got some great state parks here in Mississippi, but one of the most unique is definitely Grand Gulf Military State Park. In addition to typical park amenities, like campgrounds and hiking trails, it’s brimming with incredible historic sites, including a charming chapel that dates back to the 1800s. Take a look:
One of the many small town gems that fill Mississippi, Grand Gulf Military State Park is hiding in Port Gibson in Claiborne County.

The land that the 400-acre park occupies was once the bustling river port town of Grand Gulf (hence the park’s name). Today, the park features several restored buildings that date back to Grand Gulf’s heyday, including a lovely chapel.

Though the delightful little chapel’s official name is Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, it’s also known as Confederate Memorial Chapel.

The church was built in 1868, but not in Grand Gulf. It was actually constructed in Rodney, and that’s where it remained until 1983, when it was donated to Grand Gulf Military State Park.

After being moved to the park, the church was completely restored to its original condition. Just a few short years later, in 1985, it was declared a Mississippi Landmark.

By 1987, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, it serves as a non-denominational chapel – and as the centerpiece of the park.
