Mississippi’s historic sites aren’t limited to antebellum mansions and battlefields. One of the state’s best sites from the past is Sky Lake Wildlife Management Area (WMA) – and that’s because it’s where you’ll find some of the oldest trees on earth. Not only are the trees ancient, but they’re huge, too. When it comes to exploring the WMA, there are several options – one of which is a 2.6-mile paddling trail. Take a look:
One of the Delta’s best natural wonders, Sky Lake WMA is located in the small town of Belzoni.

A must-visit for all ages, the 3,500-acre WMA is home to some of the oldest and biggest bald cypress trees on earth.

The massive trees, which are over 1,000-years-old, have been aptly dubbed giant living dinosaurs of the Delta.

Exploring Sky Lake is easy and can be done a couple of ways. First, there’s a 1,700’ boardwalk, which leads straight into the heart of the ancient forest, giving you close-up views of the living giants.

Another option is the WMA’s paddling trail, which is designed for canoes and kayaks.

The trail totals 2.6 miles; however, it’s divided into four segments, which are marked with signs in different colors, so you can easily shorten the trail to suit your needs.
