Of all the sights on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, the Biloxi Lighthouse is probably one of the most well known. And while many residents know about it, not many have visited the iconic lighthouse, which is a real shame because it’s got a lot to offer. First, you can climb to the top to take in the expansive vistas of Biloxi as well as the surrounding coastline. But the great views don’t end there. There’s also a pier that extends out over the Gulf of Mexico, where you can take in even more waterfront vistas. Take a look:

The Biloxi Lighthouse is situated in front of the Biloxi Visitors Center on Beach Boulevard.

A great stop before you head to the lighthouse, the Biloxi Visitors Center houses nearly a dozen exhibits. The center’s 2nd floor porch is also the perfect place to get your first view of the Biloxi Lighthouse.

Loaded with history, the lighthouse dates back to 1848 and remained in operation for over a century. By 1968, the city of Biloxi took ownership of the lighthouse and eventually opened it for tours.

A reminder of the city’s resilience, the lighthouse has survived numerous hurricanes throughout the years.

Getting to the top of the 65’ lighthouse requires climbing 57 steps…of a spiral staircase. But that’s not all. You’ll also have to climb a ladder topped by a 19” X 23” trap door into the light room.

You don’t have to wait until you get to the top to see interesting sights, though. The interior walls of the lighthouse feature waterlines from hurricanes of years past.

The trek may be a bit strenuous but is completely worth it once you get to the top and take in the expansive 360-degree vistas.

After touring the lighthouse, consider taking a stroll down the nearby Lighthouse Pier for a different perspective on your surroundings.

Open to the public, the pier extends 865 feet out over the Gulf of Mexico.

It’s not just waterfront views you’ll find at the end of the pier, though. There’s also a gazebo and lowered fishing deck.
