If you need to relax and unwind, you need to be at the lake, where time moves slower, and all of your cares seem to magically disappear. Fortunately, there is no shortage of lakes in Colorado, including the large and unbelievably serene Grand Lake.

Located just to the west of Rocky Mountain National Park in the aptly named town of Grand Lake, Grand Lake is an iconic Colorado destination… and for a good reason!

Measuring 1.5 miles at its longest point and 1 mile at its widest, Grand Lake is an incredible 389 feet deep, making it both the largest and deepest natural lake in Colorado.

Also part of the headwaters of the Colorado River, Grand Lake is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true, thanks to not only its natural beauty and splendor, but its many fishing, boating, and swimming opportunities.

Not only is Grand Lake considered to be the largest lake in Colorado, but also the most haunted, as legend states that Ute women and children were killed while sitting on rafts in the middle of the lake during a violent storm.

While the legend of Grand Lake is downright dark and sinister, both the lake and the town are anything but, and should be given ample time to explore and enjoy.

During your time in town, be sure to window shop along the old-fashioned boardwalk, layout on the swim beach, and enjoy homemade ice cream from one of the town’s creameries. Yum!
