The 26-room building was built by and named after the Marquis de Mores, a French businessman who settled here to start a cattle ranch and meatpacking business in the late 1800s. It was he who established the local town of Medora, which is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state.

Both inside and out, this beautiful structure is truly fascinating. Though his cattle business ended in failure, the Marquis lived an eventful life. He named the town after his wife, Medora Marie Von Hoffman.

The mansion was not the permanent home for the Marquis and his family - they split their time between France, where he was from, and North Dakota, often using the mansion as a hunting lodge.
