Living in PA means we’re around history all of the time, whether we realize it or not. While we can certainly discover a wealth of history in the museums that dot the state, sometimes we want to get outdoors, explore, and get a taste of history that way. That’s just what you’ll do on the Heritage Rail Trail in Pennsylvania that meanders 27 miles through history.
Whether you follow part or all of the Heritage Rail Trail, which travels from York to New Freedom (or vice-versa), you’re in for a historical adventure that’s drenched with beauty.

You can start the 27-mile rail-trail in New Freedom, just south of Maryland’s border, then make your way to York County Colonial Courthouse. Or, you can do it the other way, whichever you prefer.

The Heritage Rail Trail is predominately flat, making it an ideal adventure for hikers, bikers, and walkers. In the winter, it attracts cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Even more importantly, the rail trail is ADA accessible.

Regardless of where you start the trail, in New Freedom or in York, if you make the entire 27-mile trek, you’ll travel through such communities as Glen Rock.

You’ll also pass several significant historical sites, including Hanover Junction, a treasure trove of Civil War history. If you have time and it’s open, you might want to check out the museum tucked in the station.

The New Freedom Train Station, also along the trail, now hosts a fascinating railroad museum. Again, if you have the time and it’s open, definitely carve out a bit of time to check it out.

Don’t forget to bring your camera for your historical hike, because you’ll also pass by Howard Tunnel known as the world’s oldest “continuously operating” railroad tunnel. The first trains traveled through the tunnel back in 1883.
