We’ve mentioned before that we consider Bellingham the most hippie town in Washington, which definitely isn’t a bad thing. Considering it’s surrounded by nature, full of tasty eateries and fun bars, and home to a major university, the label certainly fits. And if you’ve ever dined at Homeskillet, Bellingham’s grooviest restaurant, you’ll probably agree.
Homeskillet is located on Kentucky Street in Bellingham, where it has remained since its 2012 opening.
HortonPandas / TripAdvisor The name comes not from a signature dish, but from a line Washington native Rainn Wilson’s character uttered in the movie Juno.
When you arrive, you’ll be greeted by the lovely giant chicken, Velveeta.
richie1732 / TripAdvisor Considering the owners of this place, Kirby and Tina, met in Antarctica while they were cooking for 1200 scientists, there’s no way this eatery wasn’t going to be a bit eccentric. Velveeta was the product of a dream Tina had at Burning Man, and she’s fantastic.
The interior of Homeskillet is tiny… and we do mean tiny.
HomeSkillet / Facebook There are fewer than 20 tables, and there’s only one that can seat a party of four. Needless to say, group dining is not recommended here. But somehow, that only adds to the cozy ambiance.
But as fun as the vibrant colors and hippie atmosphere are, it’s the food that draws people to restaurants, and the cuisine here never disappoints.
HomeSkillet / Facebook The food is locally sourced, and everything is made in-house when possible. They even smoke their own pork.
Homeskillet serves breakfast and lunch.
Sam C / TripAdvisor And while the lunch here is fantastic, it’s the breakfast that put them on the map. In fact, they don’t even serve lunch on the weekends… just all-day breakfast.
Co-owner Kirby cooks every meal from scratch here, so this is the farthest thing from fast food.
HomeSkillet / Facebook They can’t even accommodate takeout orders on the weekends, that’s how popular it is. To say the food here is delicious would be an understatement.
Homeskillet is open Tuesday - Saturday from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Jolie P / TripAdvisor The eatery is closed on Mondays to give the team time to rest.
Due to its small size, you might have a bit of a wait when you check out Homeskillet. But it’s well worth it to support such a groovy place.
