The great outdoors doesn’t get much better than at Lower Mountain Fork River near Broken Bow in southeastern Oklahoma. It’s hailed as the best whitewater stream in the state and with the warm weather approaching, the cold stream water is the perfect place to cool off. The Mountain Fork River is hailed as one of the purest rivers in the state and is very popular for trout fishing. It’s lined with hundred-year-old cypress trees, beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife.

The river is 98 miles long and divided up into two sections: Lower and Upper. It flows through part of the Ouachita Mountains.

The Lower Mountain Fork River has 12 miles of designated trout fishing, so there is plenty of room to spread out and cast a line. Rainbow and brown trout are stocked every other Thursday year-round by the Oklahoma Fish and Game Department.

The river is also a popular canoe and kayak float trip destination from spring through fall. About 5 miles of the Lower River runs through Beavers Bend State Park, where boat access is unlimited.
