One of North Dakota’s most popular destinations is the painted canyons of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Throughout summer, thousands of people explore the rugged terrain and marvel at the landscape – just like at the Grand Canyon. After summer, though, the park becomes quiet and doesn’t see visitors very often – and that’s a shame! The beauty of the badlands doesn’t end in the summer, in fact, a dusting of snow across the buttes can make it look even more spectacular in the winter.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park is like a Grand Canyon of the north - a huge, stunning landscape of colorful ridges and valleys all surrounding the Little Missouri River. It’s beautiful to visit in the spring, summer, and fall when it’s full of color, but people are missing out on it during the winter.

The park itself is indeed open year-round, all day every day, so you can enjoy it whenever you’d like. Even the campgrounds are open for those who want to extend their visit.

Historic points of interest like the Chateau des Mores look lovely against the winter background, too. It’s a unique winter wonderland that many don’t even consider checking out, meaning you’ll probably have a lot of peace and quiet there while you’re exploring.

Some park-goers never leave, of course. You still have the chance to see bison, wild horses, big horned sheep, and other wildlife when you visit during this season. It’s one of many people’s favorite parts about the park, and it doesn’t go away just because it’s not summer.
