One of the most popular state parks in North Dakota is the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, located near Mandan. It has a rich history, beautiful views of the Missouri River, trails, campgrounds, and even the state’s only working trolley. But beyond this fun recreational park, there is a dark past. If you ask some people their opinion, they say the park is home to more than park staff and guests… but residents from beyond, as well. Do you believe in ghosts? The ghost story behind this place just might convince you.
Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is iconic for its beautifully reconstructed fort buildings, impressive views, and its popular yearly haunted house attraction. But the haunts don’t stop after Halloween is over; according to many people, there are real ghosts wandering the place.

The fort was originally established in 1872 under the name Fort McKeen, which was later changed. Here, the army of Lt. Col. George A. Custer set off for the infamous Battle of the Little Bighorn, where he was defeated. You can see the post cemetery for yourself at the park.

Many of the fort’s buildings have been preserved and reconstructed, and it is said that when they were brought back to life, so too were the spirits of the long lost dead of the fort.

The most notable reconstruction was that of the colonel’s house, now known simply as the Custer House. It is said that Custer and his wife, Libby, linger as restless ghosts.

According to certain accounts, Custer and Libby haunt the home and show their presence through eerie footstep sounds and whispers. Supposedly, a woman dressed in black has been seen staring out of the second-story window.

There are supposed instances of hearing ghostly weeping, stomping, and more in other buildings at the fort. It doesn’t matter if the yearly haunted house event is set up or not - people can be spooked in any season.

These days, reenactments are held and the history is passionately shared by park staff and guests. Whether or not there is true paranormal activity here is up for you to decide, but it’s said that even skeptics have experienced the unexplainable here. What do you think?
