There’s a lot of great food in Iowa. From burgers to pizza, if you’re not in the mood to cook you’ll still find a way to be full and satisfied. If you’re really hungry, most of the time just about anything will do. But when you’re in the mood for something special it’s always nice to find something home-cooked. For that, we recommend this German restaurant. There might not be another place with food this good without having to use your passport.

Welcome to The Ronneburg Restaurant in Amana! Named after the Ronneburg Castle in Hesse, Germany this spot has been dedicated to authentic German food since the day they opened.

In fact, the current home of the restaurant was once a communal kitchen for the Amana colony. And in 1950 it became the restaurant you see today. Walking in feels like entering your family’s dining room. It’s cozy and filled with the smell of German cooking.

Everything here is impossibly authentic. Of course, they’ve got wiener schnitzel, which is a traditional dish of veal breaded in their special schnitzel blend and grilled.

Meals here are served two ways. Choose to go “family style” and you’ll get your choice of entree plus coleslaw, cottage cheese, pickled beets, bread & butter, hot vegetables, fried potatoes & gravy and hot sauerkraut. And each of these can be replenished when you’ve finished it!

Or, get your very own plated version of the family-style meals and have it all to yourself! We recommend the Bavarian chicken pictured here.

Or, consider the oven baked steak platter which is slowly baked for several hours in its own gravy with caramelized onion.

Their salads are healthy, but feel oh-so German.

And, unlike many other German restaurants Ronneburg is open for breakfast. And if the size of this pancake is any indication you’re going to want to come hungry!
