Vermont, and for that matter the U.S., is not known for old and astonishing cathedrals, but what we do have are old-fashioned and elegant churches throughout our land. Such an establishment is the Old Round Church in Richmond. The architectural beauty and simplicity of this idyllic church invite the visitor to a warm and lovely small-town Vermont setting.

The Old Round Church was constructed between 1812 and 1814 and was built to serve five congregations in the area, as well as a meeting location for the town of Richmond.

Because of the unusual shape of the church, a few legends have persisted through the years as to why the church was constructed in such a manner. One such tale explains that the sixteen-sided structure was a way to make it impossible for the devil to be hiding in a corner. Well, that’s one way to solve the problem.
