When spring arrives in New Hampshire, things feel alive! The trees are green, the temperatures are warmer and life just feels brighter. That’s certainly going to be true in just a few days as the biggest full moon of the year is set to grace our night skies. Put it on your calendar, have a jacket ready (because, let’s be honest, it’s still chilly around these parts!) and make your way outside to see it.

On Tuesday April 7th, 2020 New Hampshirites all over the state are going to want to grab a blanket and head outside to gaze skyward.

While we all know that full moons appear once a month, it’s not every month that we get to experience a supermoon.

You’ve probably heard the term “supermoon” before, but you might not know that it refers to a full moon that appears to be larger and brighter than normal.

This happens when the moon travels closest to the earth.

When this happens in the spring, the moon is referred to as a “pink moon.” While we’re a little disappointed that this doesn’t actually refer to the color of the moon we do love how pretty it sounds.

The name actually comes from the face that its appearance coincides with the arrival of one of the first flowers to bloom in North America, the pink phlox.

There are four supermoons in 2020, but April’s will be closest to Earth. That’s why this is expected to be the most magnificent of the year.

The first two supermoons have already occurred and the last will take place in May.

nasamarshall / Flickr The best way to see the April Pink Moon is to…go outside! It’s that simple. The peak is expected at 9:35 p.m., which means you can keep the little ones up to see it at its largest and brightest!

If you love the night sky as much as we do, you’ll also want to be prepared for surges of up to 100 meteors per hour that will light up the New Hampshire skies during the 2020 Lyrid meteor shower this April!
