There are a LOT of great views to witness here in the Gem State, but few compare to the grandeur that awaits at the top of Scotchman Peak near Clark Fork. From this hiking summit, you’ll enjoy a view of three different states, two countries, and one proposed wilderness area. It’s a breathtaking scene, to say the least, and it’s worth every single step it takes to get to the top.
From the 7,000-foot summit of Scotchman Peak, hikers can enjoy a heavenly panorama that boasts Lake Pend Oreille to the south, Montana’s Cabinet Mountains to the east, and Canada to the north. It’s one of the best views in the state, and it’s just a single day hike away.

The hike to this extraordinary summit is eight miles round trip, but it’s steep. Hikers will gain more than 3,500-feet on this mountain hike, so you’re bound to work up a sweat. But those who tough it out will find themselves generously rewarded at the top!

To get to the trailhead, take Highway 200 from Clark Fork and turn north onto Main Street. Follow this road and keep left at the fork. Turn right onto FR 2295 and then left onto FR 2294 where you’ll find a sign pointing toward Scotchman Peak Trail #65.

The first mile or so of the trail sets off on a steep grade before easing up. From here, you’ll be led through stunning forest scenery, fields, and some switchbacks. About two-thirds of the way along the trail is when the views open up and you’re treated to wide expanses of pristine North Idaho scenery.

The trek to the top is definitely a workout, but you’ll be so glad you endured it. At the top, you’ll find yourself completely surrounded by wilderness, including forests and mountains that go on as far as the eye can see. It’s pure heaven.

The summit also boasts a small rock hut where you can sit and relax, sheltered from the wind. Believe it or not, this hut was actually used as a fire lookout by the Forest Service for three decades.

Lastly, keep your eyes peeled for the numerous mountain goats that call Scotchman Peak home. Just be sure not to approach, touch, or feed them, since human contact with the goats has been a problem in the past.
