This culinary achievement wasn’t made in one of Florida’s big cities where foodies flock to a new restaurant opening every week. This chowder was created in a tiny town on Florida’s Nature Coast, with a population of about 800 people, at a restaurant called Tony’s.

Eric Jungklaus, the owner of Tony’s Seafood Restaurant in Cedar Key, crafted this incredible clam chowder and took it to the Knorr Great Chowder Cook-Off in Rhode Island, winning three years in a row from 2009 through 2011. The only reason he stopped winning? After three wins in a row, contestants have to retire to keep things from getting monotonous.

If you love clams, Cedar Key is the place to visit. This town is famous for its clams, which you can find in delicious dishes in restaurants all over town. Oddly enough, though, they’re not used in Tony’s clam chowder. It would be too expensive, and basically, their subtle flavor would be wasted on a chowder.

Their famous chowder is perfectly balanced with a bit of a spicy kick, and oh so tasty. Don’t worry if you don’t like heat, it’s not as spicy as our own Minorcan clam chowder from St. Augustine (which is also really good but totally different from the New England variety).
