However, the lighthouse that exists today was not the first on the island. The original Assateague Lighthouse, built in 1833, stood only 45 feet tall and was home to a lighthouse keeper by the name of David Watson.

Mr. Watson lived alone and faithfully monitored the lighthouse for seven years. Tragically, he died in the lighthouse, for reasons still unknown today.

Despite the door being securely locked each evening, it’s not unusual to find the door mysteriously unlocked in the morning. It’s as though someone – or something – has been frequenting the lighthouse.
