While the rest of the country is going to experience a springtime polar vortex, Florida has a few different things to contend with weather-wise. Hurricanes. Don’t worry just yet, we don’t have any hurricanes on the radar anytime soon. But, hurricane season is fast approaching, and there are quite a few hurricane predictions that we should keep in mind. Check out these 2020 hurricane predictions in Florida.

New studies show that there will be up to 16 named tropical storms during this upcoming hurricane season, with eight of those becoming full-fledged hurricanes.

The study, which was conducted by scientists at Colorado State University, predicts that the Atlantic Coast will see a flurry of activity this hurricane season.

Scientists have determined that out of the eight predicted hurricanes, half of them will become major storms — we’re talking category 3 or more.

These predictions are above-average compared to usual hurricane predictions, which usually yields on average around 6.5 hurricanes every year.

There are a few different factors that led to this scientific prediction, starting with the oceanic temperatures in the Atlantic being much warmer than usual.

Warm water eventually will become the perfect condition for hurricane weather — warm air that rises up will feed the storm increasing speed and size.

Beyond warm water, the hurricane predictions used nearly 40 years of previous hurricane data and took that into account as well.

The likelihood that Florida’s eastern coast, Gulf Coast, and panhandle will be hit by a hurricane this season is up nearly 15 percent, which means that it’s best to be prepared just in case these predictions come true.
