Not to brag, but we Texans have quite a few natural talents. Surviving triple-digit summers, eating steak like it’s our job, and being able to smell an imposter a mile away are just a few of our many strong suits. Thanks to WalletHub, we can now add driving to that ever-growing resume of attributes. The Lone Star State ranked #4 in the U.S. for driving in 2020, and here’s why:

We have the 5th lowest average gas prices, with only Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Louisiana surpassing us. Hawaii, on the other hand, is the most expensive.

Car repair shops abound in the Lone Star State, as we have the 6th most per capita in the nation. Texas also has the 2nd highest amount of car washes, so our rides can always be squeaky clean!

In terms of vehicle repair costs, we’re just about at the halfway mark at #22. At least there are plenty of mechanics around to fix the problem ASAP!

Unfortunately, our state did fall short in a few areas. We ranked 28th in traffic fatality rate, putting us at #13 for overall safety.

We all know how nightmarish rush-hour traffic can be in Houston and Austin, so it should come as no surprise that we ranked 30th in that regard. Mississippi has the lowest percentage of congestion during peak driving times.

Despite three states beating us out, we still performed better than all of them in certain aspects. For example, Texas has fewer days of precipitation and better access to vehicles and maintenance than Iowa.

In contrast, Hawaii brings up the rear at #50. It has the highest gas prices and auto maintenance costs, fewest auto repair shops, and nearly the most days with precipitation, highest car theft rate, and fewest car washes per capita.
