Tallest Bridge In Vermont Has Crazy Good Views Of The Quechee Gorge

There’s something enthralling yet calming about walking across a bridge. On the one hand, there is intrigue and perhaps some mild trepidation when crossing a structure hanging in the air over a body of water; yet, on the other hand, there is also some feeling of peace and serenity in the crossing. Knowing that you are high above whilst being secure is a gratifying notion, which allows you to take in the marvel that is being suspended and viewing your surroundings from a bird’s eye view. While not every bridge offers this, one that certainly does, and with intensity, is the Quechee Gorge Bridge in Hartford, Vermont.

Standing at 163 feet high, the Quechee Gorge Bridge is the tallest bridge in Vermont.

The bridge has two lanes of traffic and sidewalks on either side where pedestrians can stop at enjoy the view of the Quechee Gorge.

Built in 1911, the Quechee Gorge Bridge was, at that time, the tallest bridge in New England. Today, the bridge is listed as a National Register of Historic Places.

At 285 feet long by 41 feet wide, the steel bridge hanging over Quechee Gorge is Vermont’s oldest remaining steel arch bridge.
