Taking a hike in Oregon means getting out and basking in some pretty amazing natural beauty. But, some hikes can also take you to some fascinating remnants of the past. This particular hike to Bohemia Mountain will pepper in some bits of history along the route that are fascinating, to say the least. Check out this hike to an abandoned place in Oregon that might just rival all other hikes you experience. Especially if you’re a ghost town enthusiast.
The hike to Bohemia Mountain and the ghost town of Bohemia City is just under three miles, round trip, and along the way you’ll explore an abandoned place that will take you right back to the 1860s.

To see the ghost town of Bohemia City, travel from Cottage Grove about 25 miles. Take the hiking trail from the junction at Bohemia Saddle, or drive to the old Musick Guard Station, and take the short trail from there. The roads in the area can be a bit confusing, so use the Forest Service’s directions below.

Bohemia City was built in the 1860s and once produced gold and silver, to the tune of about $1 million. You’ll see large mounds of tailings from the mines…

…and the area is riddled with mine shafts. Most have been blocked off in one way or another, and you’ll want to steer clear of them. Some are quite deep, and can be very dangerous. While you explore the area, watch for mine shafts - both intact and collapsed.

You’ll find bits of equipment, some rail line, and a building that looks like a small water tower.

These fascinating remnants of history tell a story of the Bohemia Gold and Silver Mining District.

The post office was established in 1893, and still stands today. Explore it carefully - it’s been abandoned since the 1920s.

The view from the front porch is pretty impressive.

You’ll also see an old horse barn here. Check it out, but use caution because not all of the supports are in great shape at this point. With further inspection, you’ll see the foundations of other buildings long gone.

After you’re done exploring the ghost town, head up the trail to the summit of Bohemia Mountain, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the valley below.
