We recently took West Virginians on a hike through an abandoned village. Today’s journey will lead you on a wonderful trip to another one of the Mountain State’s deserted spots. Put on your hiking shoes and get ready for a surreal experience as we travel through the forest to an abandoned dam.
Located one mile into the forest of Spencer, West Virginia, is quite an unexpected sight. Covered in moss and rising up beneath the tree canopy is an abandoned dam from another time.

Ben’s Run Trail is a 1.9-mile loop that leads to this surreal sight. The hike meanders through the forest to this unexpected destination.

From the forest floor rises a large man-made structure. It’s quite out of place in this woodland wonderland.

The structure is leftover from another time left to slowly be reclaimed by nature.

Discover the small urban waterfall that flows through the ruins. As with any abandoned structure, use care when exploring the area.
