Getting yourself motivated to spend some time outside is easy when you’re in a place like Maine. There are tons of trails, easy and hard, that will bring you over the hills and through the woods (as they say!) to some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. One of our favorite ways to enjoy being outside is by taking a trail that ends with something incredible. Like this double waterfall, for instance!

There’s so much to do in Grafton Notch State Park that you could visit multiple times and still not feel like you’ve scratched the surface of what it has to offer.

If you’re just in Maine for a visit and have one shot to see something beautiful, you’ll want to go straight for the hike to the double waterfall that is Screw Auger Falls.

To access it head to the park. Simple! About a mile into the park you’ll see the sign indicating that Screw Auger Falls is near.

The actual trail is just under a half-mile, but you can get to the falls in just a tenth of a mile! And for those that are a bit unsteady, you’ll find guardrails near the falls themselves. Although the rest of the trail does not have rails.

The hike is pretty simple, but if you’re unsteady on your feet or have mobility issues it will be a challenge as the trail is not paved.

Once you arrive you’ll see it! The highest drop is about 30 feet cascading over the granite ledge into the gorge below.

The lower falls are about the same size, but their lower location makes them feel a bit smaller.

Because water is always moving the area can be slippery, so always be cautious when walking near the falls.

This is a wonderful part of the state and if you have time, it’s worth exploring the rest of the park.

To get back to your starting point, just turn around and head back the same way you came!
