Spring is right around the corner which means it will be prime hiking season here in the Sooner State. For an easy out-and-back hike, head to Heavener Runestone Park and take the loop trail to the falls where you’ll feel like you’ve entered another world. The foliage is thick and luscious and you’ll also find fascinating pieces of history, including Viking inscriptions that some say date back to 1000 A.D.

Heavener Runestone Park is a 55 park located in Le Flore County in southeastern Oklahoma. The area looks like something from another world…not something you would normally find in the state.

The park is one of the most unusual sites in the Southern U.S. due to its mysterious carvings on the side of the rocks. Although not proven, most people believe these carvings were left by the Vikings over 1,000 years ago.
