Missouri has no shortage of crystal clear lakes and rivers, where we can spend leisurely days floating and soaking up the sun. However, if you’ve only got a few hours to spare, head to this spring that boasts the most brilliant blue water in Missouri. While swimming is not allowed, the sheer beauty of the blue water is worth the visit.

While the sign leading to Blue Spring boasts it’s the eighth largest spring in Missouri, the Missouri Department of Conservation asserts it’s now the sixth largest. Either way, it’s definitely worth a visit.

The brilliant blue spring is, in fact, the deepest spring in the state, measuring 300 feet deep. Each day Blue Spring feeds 90 million gallons of water into the Current River.

You can reach the spring in one of several ways. For the easiest and quickest route, park at the Blue Spring Parking Area. There, you’ll pick up the trail that leads, about a quarter of a mile, to the spring.

However, if you’re up for a bit more of an adventure, lace up your hiking boots and follow the three-mile (round trip) Blue Spring Trail.

Whichever trail you follow, remember to stay on the path to protect the local vegetation.

Both trails lead straight to Blue Spring, which you can admire from a wooden viewing platform. Swimming, wading, and fishing are all prohibited, but the spring still provides a beautiful backdrop for photos.

Look for a variety of plants in the water, including water starwort and American bur-reed. You might also catch a glimpse of such birds as hawks and yellow-throated warblers.
