We’ll never stop seeking out new swimming holes to cool off in on a hot summer day, and there’s one hiding right under our noses at Colorado Bend State Park. Known for the iconic Gorman Falls, this Hill Country destination is also home to the underrated Spicewood Springs: a tropical oasis complete with a waterfall and surrounded by lush greenery.
Located two hours northwest of Austin, Colorado Bend State Park is such an underrated destination. 35 miles of multipurpose trails, including one that leads to the iconic Gorman Falls, plus cave tours and a river perfect for paddling make it a bucket list-worthy natural wonder.

You’ll encounter several water crossings along the 3.8-mile journey, so make sure to wear shoes with sufficient grip. If you have small children, this may not be the best trail as it’s easy to slip on the rocks.

Many hikers prefer to start on the Spicewood Canyon Trail, ascending first before looping back down to the springs trail. This allows for two different perspectives: awe-inspiring scenic overlooks that essentially showcase the entire Hill Country landscape, and jungle-like swimming holes that refresh and rejuvenate.

There are nearly 50 campsites in the park, so feel free to extend your stay overnight. Both primitive tent and RV, as well as group sites are scattered in different areas, with varying amenities depending on which type you select.
