Wolves are majestic, beautiful creatures. And at Wolf Haven International, the mission is to dispel all the misinformation around them while caring for the displaced, injured, and captive-born wolves they rescue. Located in the small town of Tenino in Thurston County, this place is a nature lover’s paradise — and since you can schedule a visit with the wolves, it’s safe to say it’s an animal lover’s paradise as well.
Wolf Haven International is one of the largest wolf sanctuaries of its kind in North America.
HappyToSeeItAl / TripAdvisor It sits on 82 acres in a quiet, peaceful part of the state.
Since its 1982 opening, Wolf Haven International has rescued and cared for more than 300 wolves.
Wolf Haven International / Facebook Most of them were privately owned, and some came from zoos, roadside attractions or other less than ideal situations.
Once the wolves are here, they have a lifetime home — and you can visit.
Wolf Haven International / Facebook 50-minute visits can be scheduled online, which costs just $13 for adults. Children from 4-12 can enjoy the experience for $7.50 (kids under 4 are free).
During your visit, you’ll go on a self-guided tour and learn more about what the sanctuary does and the species (wolves and otherwise) who make their home there.
dnelson_1971 / TripAdvisor You’ll also get plenty of up-close-and-personal views of the beautiful wolves, which is an amazing experience.
When you visit, it’s important to remember that you’re a guest in the wolves’ home.
Wolf Haven International / Facebook Silence your phones, leave your pets behind, and make sure your children behave. While a standard visit may not be fun for young children, the sanctuary does offer child-focused visits in June, July, and August, at 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.
Aside from visits, one great way to support this wonderful organization is to adopt a wolf.
Wolf Haven International / Facebook For just $25, you’ll receive a photo of your wolf, a biography, and a personalized adoption certificate. Classrooms can adopt a wolf for $40 that includes a wolf photo for every student.
The team at Wolf Haven International takes great care of their wolves, and of the property.
433corrinne / TripAdvisor The wolves are treated to the best food, medical care, and lots of love.
