There are a lot of historic sites in Mississippi, but one of the most unique is Soule Steam Feed Works – and that’s because it’s America’s last intact steam engine factory. The perfectly preserved factory is now a museum – complete with antique equipment. Take a look:

Located in Meridian, Soule Steam Feed Works is an actual steam engine factory that operated from 1892 until 1980.

Today, it serves as the state’s official historic industrial museum, which makes sense since it’s been so well preserved.

In fact, most of the factory, including the equipment and fittings, is in the same condition as it was the day the factory closed its doors.

Offering a unique glimpse into the past, the museum sheds some light on Mississippi’s industrial past, which often gets overlooked since the state is mostly associated with agriculture.

Exhibits and accompanying signage shed some light on how things were made in the early 20th century. The in-depth exhibits also put into perspective just how hard factory employees had to work back then.

And unlike many historic manufacturing facilities, Soule Steam Feed Works gives visitors a chance to learn about the manufacturing process as a whole – from raw materials to finished products.

The museum also includes a replica of an employee locker room from the 1900s as well as an office – complete with antique office equipment, including a dictating machine, known as Ediphone.

Smaller exhibits on varying industries are also part of the museum and include things like a broom-making shop and letterpress print shop.

For a real treat, visit Soule Steam Feed Works the first weekend in November, when the factory holds its annual festival. During the fest, the antiquated equipment is brought back to life, operating with live steam!
