You’ve heard of haunted houses, haunted hotels, even haunted bars… but a haunted canyon sounds a bit far-fetched, even for a ghost story. However, if you’ve ever spent any time on Bear Canyon Road or camped at the Bear Canyon Campground, you may know exactly what we’re talking about. This area is packed with paranormal activity, and no one can quite explain why.

Bear Canyon is one of the most popular recreation sites in the Bozeman area.

The Bear Canyon Campground stays bustling during its peak season, and it’s hard to imagine a place so lively being so eerie.

This area’s recorded history goes back to the late 1800s, when the canyon was booming thanks to the Cooper Saw Mill.

Kaylee Grote / alltrails.com It became even more popular when a downhill ski area was developed around 1941. While we don’t know what may have occurred to warrant paranormal activity here, the possibilities are endless.

Many people have reported seeing a little girl who attempts to lead them off the Bear Canyon Trail and into the woods.

Tawnya Dawn / Flickr She seems especially drawn to women. The few women who have dared to follow her are led to the middle of nowhere after the girl disappears. Other people claim to have seen a strange mist on Bear Canyon Road.

Members of the Bozeman Paranormal Society claim to always have paranormal experiences here.

Jacob Henan / alltrails.com Some of them have heard their names called by a little girl (yikes!) and smelled cigarette smoke even when no one was smoking. One of the members received a phantom phone call (a call from a strange number with nothing but static on the other end), which is especially creepy since people don’t get cell service in the canyon. There have even been a few alleged Sasquatch sightings in the area.

So… is Bear Canyon really haunted, or are hundreds of witnesses imagining things?

mtshow / TripAdvisor Regardless of your beliefs regarding the great unknown, this really is a spectacularly beautiful place. Just don’t follow any spooky little girls into the woods and you should be just fine.
