If you’ve been a Northern California resident for long, it’s likely you know exactly what’s referred to as “The Three Shastas”—otherwise known as Mt. Shasta, Shasta Lake, and Shasta Dam. Together, the three iconic landmarks create one of the most well-known landscapes in all of NorCal. Seeing the Three Shastas is always a treat, but there’s something especially remarkable about viewing them from atop Chamise Peak. Set off on this hiking trail and you’ll be led to a pristine view of all-things-Shasta near Redding.
Offering a 360-degree view of Shasta Dam, Shasta Lake, and Mount Shasta, the trail to Chamise Peak should be on the bucket list of every NorCal adventurer. The hike is rated as moderate and it’s just a brief but breathtakingly beautiful 2.4-miles.

To reach Chamise Peak, you’ll actually hop on the Flanagan trail from its trailhead at the Flanagan Road parking lot. From here, you’ll hike for approximately 1.5-miles until you reach the turnoff for the Chamise Peak trail.

From the turnoff, you’ll continue for another mile as you climb towards the top. It’s a steady uphill climb that is manageable for most skill levels. Although, you’ll want to come prepared with sturdy shoes and plenty of water.

Even before you make it to the top, you’ll be treated to fantastic views of the surrounding area. A variety of oaks, manzanita, and wildflowers can be spotted along the way. It’s a stunning place to escape and enjoy nature’s bounty.

There’s even a wonderful view of the Sacramento River and canyon below. This is definitely the type of hike that doesn’t make you wait until the end for a memorable view!

Upon arriving at the top of Chamise Peak, you’ll be greeted with a stupendous view of “the Three Shastas” that will make you so glad you made the trek. The brilliant blue waters of Shasta Lake, the man-made wonder that is Shasta Dam, and the inspiring Mount Shasta in the distance all combine for one of the most incredible scenes in NorCal.
