Is there really anything better than a restaurant that feels like home? Ruth’s Drive-In has been open so long, it’s like a second home to generations of people who grew up in and around Hartsville in Darlington County, South Carolina. This small town burger joint opened the same year World War II came to a close. It’s not just that old, it’s that good.
Maybe you’ve seen it before, or at least seen this haunting image with a marvelously moody sky high above. While it’s artsy, the photo doesn’t do Ruth’s justice.

Here’s what Ruth’s Drive-In really looks like these days. It’s still marvelous; it’s just less moody looking. And the food is still as spot-on as it has always been.

While the menu has a number of options, burgers are the mainstay at this time-honored establishment… as are the cheese fries. If you’re feeling especially adventurous, try the chili-cheese version.

But if you must venture off the burger menu, you’ll find lunch platters, salads, hot and cold plates, and some sandwiches that may bring back the occasional childhood memories like the homemade grilled cheese or the fried bologna sandwich.

That’s if you can pull yourself away from the variety of burgers served here. Indulge in a regular old burger with your choice of toppings and side of fries. You can’t go wrong there… but you’d be missing out on some burger options you just don’t find anywhere else.

Like the Single Hot Burger, for instance, served on top of two slices of white bread and topped with cheese and gravy.

Or the Big Dog Burger (seen here in triplicate) served all the way with chili, mustard, and onions. (The triple version isn’t on the menu, but now that you know… be sure to come hungry and knock yourself out with this one!)

Ruth’s Drive-In opened in 1945 — five years before nearby Darlington Raceway opened. That’s a long time! In 2020, Ruth’s celebrates 75 years in business, an impressive run for a burger joint.
