Here in Minnesota, there are countless ways to enjoy our state’s beautiful nature areas. Whether you want to go swimming, hiking, camping, or canoeing, you’ll never run out of things to do. But what about those times when you want to enjoy Mother Nature without getting out of the car? The best solution is to go on a road trip! Minnesota has nearly two dozen scenic byways that will satisfy your nature craving no matter when you visit. One of our favorites is the Saint Croix Scenic Byway. This eastern Minnesota journey follows the path of the Saint Croix River. You’ll see some of Minnesota’s prettiest nature areas, and you won’t ever have to leave your car! Here’s what you need to know about this lovely byway:
The Saint Croix Scenic Byway is a 124-mile route along the eastern Minnesota border. It stretches north to south from Askov to Hastings, passing many other Minnesota towns along the way.

As you start out on your journey down the byway, you will notice right away that this road passes through one of the most scenic landscapes in Minnesota.

There is much to see as you drive. You will pass through a long stretch of rural Minnesota, which is dotted with farms and other charming sights. Allow yourself to take it slow so that you can take in all that this route has to offer.

You’ll also pass through some of Minnesota’s most charming towns, such as Hastings and Stillwater. Many of the small towns you’ll pass through have wonderful places to shop and eat, such as the historic Marine General Store in Marine on St. Croix.

Of course, you’ll also see plenty of nature. Along the southern part of the trail, you’ll pass many rock formations as you descend into the river valley. These beautiful cliffs are unique in this part of Minnesota. You can’t find them just anywhere!

Of course, you’ll also catch glimpses of the St. Croix River itself as you drive. This beautiful river separates Minnesota from Wisconsin. If you have time, there are many stops along the route where you can get closer and enjoy a hike or swim along the river!
